FILM CLUB: Eat The Rich

1987; Directed by Peter Richardson.

Eat The Rich is a 1987 movie about cannibalism in the highest orders of British society. Think of it as a wry English take on the Soylent Green model with the addition of Lemmy in a supporting role and cameos from Sir Paul McCartney, Jools Holland, Miranda Richardson, and the cast of The Young Ones. 200 pages into the greatest work of non-fiction of our generation, Lemmy’s autobiography White Line Fever—which I have been reading to decompress from Bellow’s Herzog, a work of fiction with a crushing amount of pathos and distinctly Jewish neuroses—I was reminded of this thoroughly entertaining work of D-grade trash cinema.

The plot centers around an upscale London restaurant, BASTARDS, which caters to the elite British ruling class. Over the course of 90 minutes director Peter Richardson and his screwball cast weave a tangled and nonsensical web of mystery, intrigue, and cannibalism, the end result of which is total anarchy and destruction via a live performance from Motörhead (who also provide the soundtrack!) during dinner service. Not gonna give anything else away but if you enjoyed Lemmy’s performance as the narrator in Tromeo & Juliet this is for you.

An Open Letter To Monster Sushi

Dear Monster Sushi on 23rd Street,

I know I have been raking you over the coals a ton lately but seriously I don’t expect a lot out of you—you are a budget priced sushi restaurant with a decent lunch special a stone’s throw away from my office—and what little expectations I do have you are certainly falling far short of. What I expect is to have a bento box lunch special with 6 pieces of sashimi—3 Yellowtail, 3 Super White Tuna—without the fear of having to run, RUN, to the nearest restroom within a half hour of eating. As it stands now in the last 7 days I have nearly shit myself twice immediately after eating in your restaurant. Twice. Two separate occasions. Same meal, same unbearable feeling in my gut that had me doubled over and holding my ass closed with one hand, same face-saving mad dash for the closest bathroom stall. And all of this happened while out and about on errands all over Manhattan, a landscape not hospitable for people with irritable bowels. Unacceptable.

In your defense you are a part of the Delta SkyMiles Rewards Network of which I have obtained V.I.P. status (5 miles per dollar, double on Mondays, Tuesdays, and Wednesdays) a factor that has significantly influenced my decision to dine with you. Your Super White Tuna and Yellowtail sashimi tastes fresh…even on a Tuesday which is when the second of these two grievous infractions occurred.

Ok, ok, ok ok. It is common knowledge that you are supposed to avoid eating fish on Tuesdays, that much I am aware of. But here is the thing: I was out til all hours on Sunday night and took a “personal day” on Monday and thus my week actually started on Tuesday which felt like my Monday since my actual Monday was spent on death’s doorstep so in my head it was cool to eat in your restaurant for lunch. Shit, by the rigorous standards of the New York City health code it should have been OK to eat there. But my Sunday night debauchery and Monday recovery time aside that is no excuse for an act of bioterrorism upon my intestines and bowels. And the first incident occurred on a Thursday, last Thursday in fact, and thank god I had saved the key to a building I was once a tenant in many years ago and one where I knew the lay of the bathrooms enough and one that I just happened to be within a few blocks of, otherwise there is no telling what was liable to have happened. Thank god for that.

What kind of fish are you serving when on a Thursday—the unofficial start of the weekend—one is forced to to take solace in a dark bathroom in a building in the Garment District that should probably be condemned?

I have eaten at the Blue Ribbons and Sushi Sambas of the world, and you, my friend, are no Sushi Samba despite your glowing review from Zagat’s.

I know I have already enshrined you in the Hall of Fame but seriously, what the fuck?

This Chelsea restaurant has gone from brasserie to brassiere.

Chef Daniel Angerer is letting diners at Klee Brasserie munch on cheese made from his wife’s breast milk.

“It tastes like cow’s-milk cheese, kind of sweet,” he told The Post.

The flavor depends on what the cheese is served with—Angerer recommends a Riesling — and “what the mother eats,” said Angerer, who once bested Bobby Flay on TV’s “Iron Chef.”

Breast milk doesn’t curdle well due to its low protein content, so a little moo juice has to be added to round out the texture

Hey you guys can we talk for a sec? So today was the second time in seven days that I ate at Monster Sushi on 23rd street to cash in on the five frequent flyer miles per dollar I get every time I eat there. It is also the second time in as many visits that I have been overcome immediately after with abdominal pain that shouldn’t be discussed in polite company.

During a Thanksgiving weekend sometime many years from now when my life story is used as the basis of a bittersweet movie about the power of redemption that defies both race and class divides in a cancer ward where I will take stock of my life and the things I have and haven’t done I can only hope that this one has been crossed off my bucket list.

Oh man, besides the previously noted invitation to a potluck dinner hosted by the crusty punx that lived in the Batcave squat overlooking the Gowanus Canal no real disasters to speak of.

There was that one long weekend in Chicago for the wedding of some friends who were to divorce a short time later where we got to town on July 4th which is when Chicago turns into Downtown Fallujah for a day and a half—seriously, like people lighting off mortars in the street; these fireworks are not meant for everyday household use—and nearly every single meal we ate was taken at an outpost of the Midwestern sandwich franchise Pot Belly. The weekend also coincided with 07/07/07 which was also Mrs. Disgusting Things I Have Eaten’s 33rd birthday and also when we ate a bunch of Chicago hot dogs at some shack in a parking lot and then caught Soul Asylum, Cracker, and Cheap Trick for free in Millennium Park but had to leave once they started in with “The Flame”.

Also notable was the chasm between the older members of our party who were bummed that Soul Asylum only played songs off of Grave Dancer’s Union and the younger members who were only familiar with the songs off of said album.
